Stalactites are formations that hang from the ceilings of caves, formed by the deposition of minerals from dripping water. They are typically composed of calcium carbonate, but can also consist of other minerals.

Water containing dissolved minerals seeps through the cave ceiling. As the water evaporates, the minerals are left behind, gradually building up to form a cone-shaped structure hanging downwards. Types of Stalactites

Some examples include soda straws (thin, hollow tubes), helictites (exhibiting unusual, twisted growths), and curtains (large, sheet-like structures).

Stalactites vs. Stalagmites

It's important to distinguish stalactites from stalagmites. While both are cave formations made of deposited minerals, stalactites hang from the ceiling ("tite" implies "ceiling"), while stalagmites rise from the cave floor ("mite" suggests "ground"). Often, stalactites and stalagmites grow towards each other, eventually forming a column.
