The basic arithmetic operations in English are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We use specific words and symbols to represent them.

Addition

Adding Numbers

We use the plus sign (+) to represent addition. For example, "2 + 2 = 4" is read as "two plus two equals four" or "two and two is four." We also use words like "added to" or "increased by". For instance, "5 added to 3" means "3 + 5".

Subtraction

Subtracting Numbers

The minus sign (-) represents subtraction. "5 - 2 = 3" is read as "five minus two equals three" or "five take away two is three." We can also say "five less than seven is two".

Multiplication

Multiplying Numbers

Multiplication uses the multiplication sign (×) or an asterisk (*). "4 × 3 = 12" is read as "four multiplied by three equals twelve" or "four times three is twelve."

Division

Dividing Numbers

The division sign (÷) or a forward slash (/) is used for division. "12 ÷ 3 = 4" is read as "twelve divided by three equals four." We also say "twelve over three is four."
